Anansi the Spider

Did you know that Anansi the Spider also known as Kwaku Anansi is one of the most important figures of West Africa and the African diaspora? He originated from the Akan culture, the Ashanti people of Ghana. In the Twi language, Anansi translates to spider.

Anansi is an anthropomorphic character that is known for his cunning, wisdom, creativity, intelligence, ability to outwit more powerful opponents, and survival tactics. Anansi’s parables are among other popular trickster tales like those of Br’er Rabbit. Anansi’s stories are used to teach morals and resilience in tumultuous times.

Sometimes he appears as a spider with a human head or a spider wearing human clothes. In some areas Anansi is revered as a god of knowledge of all stories or a god of resistance and survival. In other tales, he is simply a wise creature.

Anansi’s stories have transformed and evolved as they crossed the ocean with the slave trade and found new storytellers in the Caribbean, United States, and Europe.
